HISTORY

Tracing Our Heritage

Red Crown traces its name to the old Standard Oil Red Crown Service Station where the restaurant now resides. The Standard Oil Company was founded by the infamous John D. Rockefeller. He was considered the wealthiest American of all time, and the richest person in modern history.

The station was a fixture in Grosse Pointe Park until 2005, when it shut its doors for good. The building then sat vacant for seven years. In 2012, the Cotton family bought the abandoned building in an effort to breathe some life back into the downtown Grosse Pointe Park business district.

NEW LIFE

The Red Crown Restaurant opened its doors in 2013, with its new owners seeking to preserve the building’s former charm while giving the interior a modern update. The décor is simple: bright white brick with red accents and soft lighting for a comfortable, relaxed dining experience. This color scheme echoes the original Red Crown gas station’s design.

The restaurant was renovated in early 2020, just before the COVID-19 outbreak delaying its debut. The historic and comfortable ambiance has been preserved. Its freshly painted and reconfigured interior awaits your arrival.

When the building was purchased by the new owners in 2013, the mission was to preserve the original heritage and character of the old station while providing an immersive dining experience.

Today, we celebrate our past and attribute our current and future success to our amazing customers. We promise you this: eating at Red Crown is about treating your taste buds to something new and different, and more importantly, making memories with friends and family.

We sincerely thank you for the opportunity to be a part of those memories.

  • Gas was just $0.18 per gallon back in 1932, the year the station was built - truly a different time in our country’s history.
